Project Overview

A legal clause.
Not a life plan.

Across Indian IT services, ITES, ed-tech and aviation, employers routinely ask new hires to sign a service bond — a 1–3 year commitment backed by a forfeitable amount, in exchange for training, a laptop, or a sign-on bonus. It's standard paperwork on day one. Then it quietly becomes the backdrop to every decision an employee makes for the next several years.

Talking to bond-holders surfaced a pattern: nobody had built anything for the person living inside the bond. HR portals track compliance for the company. Job sites track the market. Nothing sits on the employee's side of the table.

Problem Statement Employees serving a mandatory bond have no single, trustworthy place to track how much time is left, what documents protect their final settlement, or whether their salary is actually keeping pace with the market — leaving them anxious, under-informed, and financially exposed at exit.
The Goal
  • Give employees a single, private place to see exactly how much bond time is left.
  • Remove the financial risk of missing a relieving-document deadline.
  • Replace salary anxiety with an honest, year-over-year view of hikes and market value.
The Solution
  • A bond countdown that turns an abstract release date into a daily, visual number.
  • A grouped, reminder-driven document checklist for before and after the last day.
  • An automatic hike tracker and market benchmark, delivered through daily notifications — no manual digging required.

Empathize — Research Process

What bond employees
never say out loud.

To avoid designing from assumption, research ran in two passes: a screener survey to size the pain quantitatively, and one-on-one interviews to hear the anxiety in people's own words. 42 respondents currently serving a service bond — IT services, ITES and ed-tech, tier-1 and tier-2 cities, 1–3 years into a 1–3 year bond — completed the survey; 8 were interviewed in depth.

Qualitative Research
Interviewer
Do you know, right now, exactly how many days are left on your bond?
Respondent 01 · QA Engineer, 8mo into bond
Not the exact number. I know the year it ends. If you'd asked me the date, I'd have had to dig up my offer letter.
Interviewer
What happens with your documents when you eventually leave?
Respondent 04 · Support Engineer, 22mo into bond
A senior at my last company forgot to collect his relieving letter for weeks, and it delayed his background check at the new job. Now I'm scared of the same thing happening to me, but I don't even know what I'm supposed to collect.
Interviewer
How do you know if your last hike was good or bad?
Respondent 06 · Business Analyst, 2yr bond
Honestly? I ask a friend in a WhatsApp group and hope they're not exaggerating. There's no real way to check.
Interviewer
If something told you all of this automatically, would you actually check it?
Respondent 08 · Software Engineer, 5mo into bond
Every day, probably. Right now I check nothing because there's nothing to check. If there was a number counting down, I'd definitely look.
Key Insights
Major Insights
Is the bond a single event or a slow-burn feeling?
It's ambient anxiety, not a countdown to a deadline — people wanted quiet reassurance more than urgent alerts.
Where's the real financial risk?
In the paperwork, not the number. A missed document costs real money at Full & Final settlement.
Why doesn't anyone talk about salary openly?
It's socially taboo. People wanted a private benchmark, not a public leaderboard.
Why hasn't this been built already?
Existing tools — HRMS portals, job boards — are built for the employer or for the market. Nobody had built specifically for the person inside the bond.

Research summary: the surveys sized the problem — most bond-holders were flying blind on dates, documents, and pay. The interviews explained why: the bond isn't a task to complete, it's a low-grade condition people live with, and every existing tool was built for someone other than them.

"I don't want a countdown that scares me. I want to know I'm not going to get burned on my way out."
Goals
  • Know the exact release date without asking HR.
  • Leave with every document intact — no Full & Final surprises.
  • Walk into the next negotiation with real market data.
Frustrations
  • HR replies take days, if at all.
  • No idea whether his last hike was fair.
  • Compares notes informally with friends — trusts nobody's numbers, including his own.
Empathy Map

Says

  • "It's probably fine, I'll figure it out closer to the date."
  • "My friend got a bigger hike, so I probably got underpaid."

Thinks

  • "What if I forfeit more than I think if I leave a little early?"
  • "Is HR even going to remind me about anything before my last day?"

Does

  • Keeps a photo of his offer letter in his phone gallery.
  • Manually notes his CTC in a phone notes app after every appraisal.
  • Asks friends in a private group chat about hikes and offers.

Feels

  • Quietly anxious and mildly distrustful of HR.
  • Relieved — briefly — whenever someone else confirms his numbers seem fine.
User Journey Map

Mapped as an anxiety curve across the bond lifecycle, not a single transaction — this is what made clear the product needed to live in the background, not just at the finish line.

01
Joining Day
Signs the bond as routine paperwork — doesn't register the weight of it yet.
02
Mid-Bond, Year 1
Settles in. The bond fades into the background; low-grade unease begins.
03
First Appraisal
Gets a hike number with zero context — good, bad, no way to tell.
04
Approaching Bond End
Starts counting manually — worried about the exact release date and any fine print.
05
Relieving & Documents
Scrambles to confirm what's owed — afraid of losing part of the final settlement.
06
Post-Bond Freedom
Finally free to negotiate and move — if the exit went cleanly.

The bond timeline is invisible — buried in a PDF offer letter, not front-of-mind anywhere.

A living countdown that turns an abstract date into a daily number.
02

Relieving documents carry real financial risk, but nobody tells you what to collect or when.

A grouped, reminder-backed checklist tied to before and after the last day.
03

Hikes arrive as a single opaque number with no year-over-year or plain-language context.

Automatic YoY hike tracking, framed in plain language.

UX Decisions & Design Principles
Zeigarnik Effect
An open, animating countdown ring keeps the bond "unfinished" in a way that invites daily check-ins instead of dread.
01
Miller's Law
Documents are chunked into two groups of 4–5 items each — Before and After Last Day — instead of one overwhelming list.
02
Peak-End Rule
The day the countdown hits zero triggers a small celebratory moment, so the lasting memory of "the bond" is relief, not anxiety.
03
Jakob's Law
Salary and hike screens borrow familiar banking-app patterns — balance up top, history below — so nothing feels unfamiliar in an already-anxious context.
04
Hick's Law
Home surfaces only four quick stats and one primary ring, deferring every other decision to a dedicated tab.
05
Aesthetic-Usability Effect
A calm, restrained visual language — mono ink plus one accent — signals trustworthiness for a product handling private salary data.
06
Design System

Calm enough
to trust with your salary.

Unbond handles two things people are naturally guarded about — a legal contract and their pay. The visual language deliberately avoids anything playful or "growth-hacky," aiming instead for the restrained, almost bank-like confidence of the rest of this system.

Branding & Identity
Unbond app icon — a white document with a jagged break, on an ink background App Icon
Icon Logic

Ink as the background — the same near-black used everywhere else in the product, so the icon reads as calm rather than alarmed. The white mark is a document with a jagged break running through it: the paperwork of the bond, visibly splitting apart. The tear is the message — the moment the document breaks is the moment the bond ends and freedom begins.

Wordmark & Tone

Set in lowercase, "unbond" — quiet and unforced. Copy stays plain and specific: "3 documents pending" instead of "Don't miss out!" — clarity over urgency, everywhere.

Prototype — Wireframes

From scribble

Interactive Prototype

Built to be
clicked through, not just looked at.

The full clickable prototype — onboarding through bond completion, including the countdown ring's fill animation and the document swipe gestures — was built in Figma and used directly in every moderated usability session below.

Countdown Ring Fill

The ring animates its fill on every app open, reinforcing forward progress without a single extra tap.

Confetti at Zero

A one-time celebratory animation the day the bond hits zero — intentionally marking the peak-end moment.

Swipe-to-Clear Documents

Swiping a document card right marks it collected; left snoozes the reminder — no modal required for either action.

Usability Testing

Before Iteration
  • A single flat list of 9 documents, undifferentiated by urgency.
  • Manual-only CTC entry, one field at a time.
  • Reminder settings buried two taps deep in Profile.
After Iteration
  • Grouped into "Before Last Day" and "After Last Day," each capped at 4–5 items.
  • Manual entry plus a payslip-photo scan shortcut for faster logging.
  • A one-tap reminder shortcut surfaced directly on Home.
Outcome & Reflection

What started as paperwork
ended as peace of mind.

Unbond turns a mandatory legal obligation into a transparent, trackable timeline — one countdown, one checklist, one honest number for what an employee's work is actually worth, delivered quietly instead of demanded loudly.

What I Learned
What surprised you most?
How much of the anxiety wasn't about the bond itself — it was about not having a single trustworthy place to check anything.
What was the hardest design decision?
Keeping the countdown ring calm instead of alarming. Early red, urgent-styled explorations tested worse than the neutral ink version — people didn't want to be reminded of a deadline, they wanted to be reassured.
What would you do differently?
Start payslip-scan research earlier — it turned out to be the single most requested shortcut across every test session.
Future Improvements
  • Regional language support for tier-2 and tier-3 city hires.
  • Anonymized peer salary benchmarking within the same company.
  • Optional, opt-in HR-side integration for verified document status.
  • Dark mode — explored, but deprioritized for this MVP scope.
Reflection

Most of what people needed already existed somewhere — in an offer letter, a payslip, a job listing. Unbond's job was never to invent new data. It was to put it in one calm place someone could actually trust, on the days they were too anxious to go looking for it themselves.
